PAX Top Cabinet – how to close the gap between cabinet and ceiling
Anyone assembling an IKEA PAX wardrobe knows the problem: a gap remains between the top of the wardrobe and the ceiling – depending on the room height, this can be 20 to over 140 centimeters of dead space. Dust collects, the look appears unfinished, and valuable storage space is lost. If you're looking for a cabinet topper at IKEA, you won't find a suitable solution – IKEA doesn't offer a cabinet topper for the PAX. Our PAX top cabinet closes precisely this gap. It is custom-made to your ceiling height and fits perfectly on top of the IKEA PAX carcass – with its own doors, side panels, and shelves. The result: a floor-to-ceiling built-in wardrobe that looks like it was made by a professional carpenter – but is based on the proven IKEA PAX system.
What are the dimensions of the PAX top cabinet?
Our top cabinet is flexible: the height can be individually set from a minimum of 30 cm to a maximum of 140 cm – to match your ceiling height. The width depends on your PAX carcass: 50 cm, 75 cm, or 100 cm. The depth corresponds to the standard PAX dimensions, so the top cabinet is flush with the carcass. Together with the IKEA PAX in heights of 201 cm or 236 cm, this allows for wardrobe solutions up to a ceiling height of 380 cm.
When measuring, you should allow for approx. 2 cm of clearance between the top edge of the top cabinet and the ceiling – this makes it easy to set up the cabinet and open the doors without problems. If you are unsure about the measurements, our consulting team can help you by phone or email.
What is included in the PAX top cabinet?
The top cabinet is an independent carcass that is placed on top of your IKEA PAX. Everything for assembly is included in the delivery – you only need your own standard tools. In addition to the carcass itself, shelves with continuously adjustable shelf supports are part of the system, so you can flexibly organize the additional storage space. Seasonal clothing, bedding, suitcases, or decorative boxes – the top cabinet offers space for everything you don't need daily.
For the visible surfaces, you order matching top cabinet doors, side panels, and, if necessary, wall panels separately. All parts are manufactured in the same color and material line, so the transition between PAX and the top cabinet visually completely disappears – a continuous, seamless front from bottom to top.
Top cabinet or floor-to-ceiling doors – what is the right solution?
Select Living offers two ways to achieve a floor-to-ceiling wardrobe. Custom-made floor-to-ceiling doors are suitable for ceiling heights up to approx. 277 cm – here, the door is simply extended and reaches the ceiling without a top cabinet. The advantage: a continuous door surface without a visible transition. The top cabinet is the right choice for ceiling heights over 277 cm or if you want additional, separate storage space above the main wardrobe.
Both solutions can be configured in the 3D PAX Planner. There, you enter your ceiling height and immediately see which variant works best for your room. For old buildings with ceiling heights of 300 cm or more, the top cabinet is usually the best solution – it creates extra storage space and, thanks to the continuous cladding, still looks like a single, custom-made wardrobe.
What materials and colors are available for the top cabinet?
The top cabinet is available in all Select Living material lines: Aurora for color and Dendro for wood. Aurora Pure offers decorative coated surfaces in modern colors, Aurora Signature a single-sided lacquered surface for a velvety-matte feel. Dendro Pure comes with a high-quality wood decor coating, while Dendro Signature uses real wood veneer. All colors and surfaces are identical to those of the PAX doors and side panels – so every detail matches.
If you want to get an idea in advance, you can order samples and compare the different surfaces at home. This way, you ensure that the color and feel perfectly match your room before you order.
Can I mount the top cabinet on a PAX with sliding doors?
No, unfortunately, this is not possible. For PAX wardrobes with sliding doors, the rail system is attached above the carcass – it blocks the space for a top cabinet. The top cabinet only works with PAX carcasses that use hinged doors. If you currently have sliding doors and don't want to do without the top cabinet, switching to hinged doors from Select Living can be useful – this way you get a floor-to-ceiling look and additional storage space in one step.
How does the PAX top cabinet assembly work?
The top cabinet is placed on top of the existing IKEA PAX carcass and connected to it. The assembly follows the same principle as the PAX itself – assemble side panels, lid, back panel and place them on the carcass. Then the top cabinet doors and side panels are mounted. The outer sides of the upper and lower units connect flush with each other, so no transition is visible.
The entire assembly can be done without special tools – all mounting materials are included in the delivery. If you need support, you will find a step-by-step guide on our assembly help page. For more complex configurations, we recommend carrying out the assembly with two people.
How much does a PAX top cabinet cost?
The price depends on the size, material line, and scope of your configuration. Basically, a top cabinet project consists of the carcass, the doors, the side panels, and, if necessary, wall panels. In the 3D PAX Planner, you see the price for each component in real time. Compared to a completely custom-made built-in wardrobe from a carpenter, you generally save 50 to 70 percent with the combination of IKEA PAX and Select Living top cabinet – with a look that doesn't have to hide.
